This week on Nation’s Restaurant News, the top story was “These are the top 10 highest-paid CEOs in the restaurant industry.” The CEOs of the publicly traded companies in the S&P 500 received a 7% pay raise in 2024 and make, on average, $18.9 million in total compensation, according to data gathered by the AFL-CIO (American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations). The national trade union center gathers and crunches the numbers from each of the 500 companies’ publicly available annual proxy statements, and releases a report of each CEO’s salary, and how much more he or she is compensated than the average worker at the company. In 2024, the median worker-to-CEO pay ratio was 285 to 1, with the median worker making $49,500 last year.
In other news, Brix Holdings — the 250-unit parent company to Friendly’s Restaurants, Clean Juice, Red Mango, and Orange Leaf — has been acquired by Legacy Brands International, an investment group managed by multi-unit Friendly’s franchisee, Amol Kohli.
Also, in the first quarter of 2025, Chipotle chief executive officer Scott Boatwright said the “consumer is sitting on the sideline” due to heightened macroeconomic uncertainty. This trend led to the chain’s first negative same-store sales report since the throes of the pandemic in 2020. Chipotle reported its second quarter 2025 results after market on Wednesday, and it seems as though the consumer hasn’t budged.
