Warm and Meaningful Resignation Letter Sample

Some unique work environments can create strong and meaningful bonds between colleagues and the management teams. When appropriate, one may wish to use a professional and tempered reference to this type of meaningful experience they’ve had as an employee.

Generally speaking, getting too personal is not the way to go in a Letter of Resignation.  Why?  Because a Letter of Resignation is used to serve your employer with an official notice of your intentions to leave the organization and when you intend to do so.   If you choose to send a deeply personal message or thank-you, that can be accomplished in a separate, personal letter to the individual, and should not be included in the resignation letter for your personnel file.

#ProTips:

  • Be truthful and be positive.  But don’t over compliment or gush.
  • Be professional, above all. This is a letter for your personnel file. You’re not signing a yearbook.
  • Don’t get too personal.  Thanking your supervisor in a personal manner can be done in person or in a personal letter to them, not in your resignation letter.
  • Offer assistance with the transition. No matter the size of an organization, replacing a departing employee or training a replacement can be difficult and time-consuming for the company. On offer to assist with this process says a great deal about your team-mentality and can help you to maintain a positive impression as you leave.
