Extended Notice Resignation Letter Sample

Giving An Extended Notice Letter of Resignation Sample

As most people know, two weeks notice is the minimum standard when providing your employer with a resignation notice, however, if and when you are able to provide additional notice of your resignation date it can be a relief for your employer and also ease the inconvenience on your employer.  Creating a positive “Exit Strategy” should be an important goal.  Finding thoughtful and respectful ways of leaving a job on the best terms possible is a good practice that can follow you for years into the future.

We’ve all heard the cliche’ about “not burning bridges” – and it’s a cliche for a good reason. It’s good, solid advice.  We’ve provided a sample resignation letter that presents your extended notice message with some flair and professionalism. One that anyone would be pleased to have as part of their personnel file.

Providing a proper and professional notification of your resignation is one of the staples of professional business etiquette.  Trust us, you’ll never regret being a true professional.

#ProTips:

  • Make every effort possible to NOT discuss your plans with any co-workers prior to advising your supervisor to avoid a situation where your supervisor hears the news from someone else in the workplace.
  • Ask to speak to your supervisor privately, so that you can advise them verbally of your intentions.
  • Have your resignation letter completed and signed, and bring it with you when you meet your supervisor. It’s always a good practice to deliver your letter to your supervisor in person, whenever possible.
  • Keep your conversation positive and respectful and be sure to advise them of your last day of work and of your intentions to continue to work hard until your very last minute on the job. Thank them for the opportunity and the experience and knowledge that you gained while working with them and the organization.
  • When providing an extended notice of resignation letter, one may also want to offer assistance with finding or training a replacement.

Dear Mr./Ms. Olivia Pope (your supervisor),

Please accept this letter as notice of my intent to resign my position of General Counsel at Pope and Associates at the end of the calendar year. I have enrolled as a full-time graduate student at Georgetown beginning in January of 2020.

While it was a very difficult decision to leave this outstanding team, it has always been one of my career goals to obtain my graduate degree in Education, Leadership & Administration.  After extensive consideration, I’ve decided that this is the best time for me to work toward finally achieving that goal.

I am extremely grateful to you and all the other members of the Executive Leadership team of this firm for your support, leadership and inspiration over the last 5 years.  It has been a gift to come to work each day.

Over the next six months, I assure you that I will work diligently to complete the projects I’ve been assigned, along with any other duties deemed necessary to assist in this transition. Please let me know how I can best support this team, moving forward.

I wish continued success to you and the entire team.

Sincerely,
