With even more competition in the job market due to high unemployment, every candidate should have the numbers work in their favor by sending a thoughtful thank you email after an interview. But, why is this overlooked part of the interview process so important?

The main reason why you should send a thank you email after an interview is the timing of an interviewer’s evaluation. Oftentimes, the person who interviewed you is filling out their scorecard within one to three hours after the interview. A candidate should use the thank you email as a way to further highlight your value as a prospective employee.

Another reason to consider drafting a thank you email after an interview is to answer any questions of doubt. Whether an interview is half an hour or a handful of hours, it’s natural to forget about highlighting a career achievement or fumbling to answer a question.
