It’s difficult to know and to acknowledge that it is time to make a career change. It’s daunting, especially if you’re not sure what career you want to pursue. So how do you know if you’re not simply having a rough month, or your boss is having a rough month, or whether it is time to step back and reflect on whether this line of work or this job is a path you should continue to walk down, or if it’s time to go another way? Below are four signs it’s time to consider a career change:

You Dread Going To Work

If you wake up every single day and have to negotiate with yourself to get out of bed and get yourself to work, it might be time to reflect on whether your current job is the one for you. If you are never excited to go to work, don’t care for the people, and make excuses to skip work or call in sick, you should have quit yesterday. Not everyone loves their chosen career, but no one should hate it.

You’re Apathetic

If you are indifferent to the quality of your work, your behavior at work and your relationships with your colleagues, that is a surefire sign you need to reflect on your job, your career and start to consider what sort of work you might care about. You spend a big percentage of your life at work, you should enjoy that time and find meaning in it.

The Workplace Is Toxic

If your employer creates an outstanding workplace culture, and you are surrounded by excellent people, those factors will invigorate you to push yourself, work hard, grow and become a better professional and a better person. The opposite is also true. If you are in a toxic work environment with mediocre colleagues, your potential for growth will be stunted. If you know your employer and colleagues are smothering your potential, it is time to go.

You See No Future There

If there is no way for you to ascend in a workplace, or you keep getting passed over for promotions, it is time to consider a change. If you look around at your superiors and can not see yourself doing that kind of work, or living their kind of life, it is time to ask yourself if this is where you should be, and if not, where that place might be. Or if you are unhappy and can not see yourself in your current job, at your current employer, it is time to leave. Find a career that gives your life meaning, and work for an employer who values your presence.
