According to Deloitte’s Human Capital Trends 2016, “A new organizational model is on the rise: a “network of teams” in which companies build and empower teams to work on specific business projects and challenges. These networks are aligned and coordinated with operations and information centers similar to command centers in the military.”

The “military”? Are you serious? How cool is that??? I am EXCITED to see that Corporate America is embracing what I as a US Navy Veteran have known for years…when you motivate, equip and transform individuals, you get good results. When you motivate, equip and transform TEAMS, you get MIND BLOWING, INCREDIBLE, CRAZY AWESOME RESULTS!!!!!!! After all, it’s like Aristotle said…

“The whole is more than the sum of its parts”
So how do you get killer results from your people and get them to live up to their FULL potential? What qualities should you look to develop while building your next “Dream Team”? I have been around the world and worked with some AMAZING teams and find they all have several things in common.

1) You gotta have HEART!!!!!!!

Number one requirement. Period. End of story. You need people who have the ability to work hard and respond resiliently to failure and adversity!!!! They need to have that inner quality…that magical “x factor” of grit and resilience that enables individuals to work hard and stick to their long-term passions and goals. PS…heart can be developed however heart cannot be taught…you either have it or you don’t.

Surround yourself with people who have heart!
You gotta have HEART!!!!!!!

2) Diversity creates opportunity:

The best teams are the most diverse teams! While you want people who have your same passion, drive and intensity, you want to avoid the “yes-man” or ‘yes-woman” mentality. You need people around you who will approach opportunities with unique vision, thoughts and ideas.

Seriously…surround yourself with the best of the best of the best…even if they are different than you …ESPECIALLY if they are different than you !~!~!

3) Learn from the past…Plan for the future!

The past is valuable. Learn from your mistakes. Learn from the mistakes of others.

Then let it go.

When something bad happens to you, see it as an opportunity to learn something you didn’t know. When another person makes a mistake, don’t just learn from it–see it as an opportunity to be gracious, forgiving, and understanding.

The past is just training; it prepares you for today… however it doesn’t define you. EVER!!!! Think about what went wrong but only in terms of how you will make sure that next time, you and the people around you will know how to make sure it goes right.

4) CELEBRATE other’s victories.

Good teams do this EXTREMELY well!!!! Yes, what you do is important…and what your team member does is JUST AS IMPORTANT!!!

Too many times, people get upset when they see someone else doing well. We let resentment into our lives even though we know it’s a poison that kills us.

KNOCK IT OFF!!!! Resentment sucks up a massive amount of mental energy–energy better applied elsewhere.

Dream teams CELEBRATE when a team member does something awesome, CELEBRATE with them…and that encourages others on the team to do something even more amazing. It’s an incredible truth that has stood the test of time….

AWESOME BREEDS AWESOME!!!
Don’t resent awesomeness. Create and celebrate awesomeness, wherever you find it, and in time you’ll find even more of it in yourself.

5) R.E.S.P.E.C.T.

Respect one anothers’ different backgrounds, personalities, cultures and preferences. Watch your language, and remember that even if you don’t mean it, sometimes it sounds more than what you meant to another person. THE BEST TEAMS HAVE THE DEEPEST RESPECT FOR EACH OTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!! When a team respects their their members’ feelings and opinions, it makes the whole team grow better, stronger and faster.

Whether it’s the new kid on the block or the grizzled veteran, show respect and watch what happens…

And it’s cool if you are singing THE SONG right now…I am too 🙂

6) Only 3 minutes of “Whine Time” per month

No complaining. Not from you. Not from your team. Don’t allow it as it will mess up your team faster than anything!!! A divisive, grumbling spirit will DESTROY morale and severely limit results.

However if you or someone on your team DOES have to complain, set a timer. For real. I allow 3 minutes (like an egg). You can whine and gripe and complain for 3 minutes and then it’s DONE!!!!! FOREVER!!!! WE MOVE ON and we focus on a SOLUTION!!!!

If you do have people who do nothing but complain, GET RID OF THEM!!!! There are over 7 billion people and I GUARANTEE there will be someone who has the expertise and wisdom you need.

Choose people with the “attitude of gratitude” vs the whining spoiled rotten little babies…EVERYONE will be thankful you did 🙂

7) Focus on what YOU can control…

Final thought is crucial. Focus on what you can control…ESPECIALLY yourself…The easiest…and hardest…thing to control in an incredible team is…yourself. Want your team to grow? You grow. Want your team to perform better? You perform better. Want your team to deliver MIND BLOWING, INCREDIBLE, CRAZY AWESOME RESULTS!!!!!!! Then you do the same!!! Here’s a common theme throughout history…

THE BEST TEAMS HAVE THE BEST LEADERS
Seriously. The best team starts…and finishes…with the best leaders!!!

It’s up to you now…what are you going to do TODAY to have the BEST TEAM that ever walked the planet?????????? It’s simple however you have to do it in a specific order…

Grow yourself!

Grow your team!!

Grow your organization!!!

That’s it for today…Let me know what I can do to help you be the BEST of the BEST 🙂
